There are many variations of the origin of the four thieves blend. Legend has it that this blend was passed down in a family of apothecaries, four of whom employed it to stave off the plague while looting the homes of the sickly and deceased. After the thieves were captured and tried for their acts of robbery, a judge apparently offered leniency if they would share how they were able to remain untouched by the effects of the plague. The thieves divulged their recipe containing selected plant oils that they would anoint and stuff masks with to evade the sickness that was known as the Black Death.
